US entertainment firm WWE signed its first Kuwaiti fighter, Nasser Alruwayeh, at its Abu Dhabi event on Friday at Zayed Sports City.
Alruwayeh, who is a national CrossFit competitor with a background in MMA and boxing, was recruited following his performance at the WWE try-out in Dubai earlier this year, which saw 40 men and women from the Middle East and India compete.
“It is an honour to sign with WWE and represent the Middle East. I look forward to competing with world-class athletes as I begin my journey in becoming a WWE Superstar,” he said.
The athlete is expected to inspire more talent from the Middle East to audition for the firm, as it continues its plan to recruit more entertainers from the region, according to Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE executive vice president.
“Signing Nasser is another example of WWE’s ongoing commitment to building a talent roster that mirrors the diversity of our fan base,” he said.
Alruwayeh will develop his talents athletically and creatively at the US-based WWE Performance Center, which has seven training rings, a strength and conditioning program and edit and production facilities that will allow him to develop his skills through in-ring training, physical preparedness and character development.
He will join a list of international entertainers who hail from a range of countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Mexico and the UK.
His recruitment follows the recruitment of Shadia Bseiso, the first woman from the Middle East to be signed by the firm, as well as Kavita Devi, the first Indian woman to sign with WWE. Both women took part in the Dubai try-out.
