The number of people in shelter as result of Cyclone Luban in Oman is expected to rise from 1,317 to 4,000 today, authorities told local media, with 18 shelters currently housing locals and expacts.
While the tropical storm west of the Arabian Sea is expected to get worse, the National Committee for Civil Defence said it is ready to tackle it when heavy rains begin on Sunday night.
So far, there has been no shortage of water, fuel or basic necessities, with a temporary cut in electricity quickly restored.
“We have not seen the worst of the storm, and that is why there have been no injuries or deaths,” Lt Col Faisal Al Hajri, director of the executive office at the National Committee for Civil Defence told Times of Oman.
The Public Authority for Civil Aviation in Oman (PACA) has issued an advisory, urging the public to take precautions and avoid venturing into low lying areas or the sea. Heavy rain, floods and strong winds will continue in Dhofar, authorities warned.
No impact in UAE
The UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) said the storm will have no direct effect on the UAE over the coming days.
“The tropical storm is continuing to move west – northwest toward the Omani and Yemeni coasts. The wind speed around the center will be 110 to 90 km/h during the upcoming 24 hr. The center of storm will cross the land next Sunday,” said NCM in a statement today.
