Major DXB access roads project set for H1 2018 completion

RTA chief reveals progress on project to improve access to the fast-growing Dubai International Airport

A major highways project to improve access to the fast-growing Dubai International Airport is set to be completed in the first half of 2018.

Two construction contracts for the Airport Street Project, which is a key part of the Road and Transport Authority’s (RTA) plans to accommodate the projected growth in the number of passengers using DXB.

It is expected that 92 million passengers will be using Dubai International Airport by 2020.

Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the RTA, announced that construction works have overall reached 45 percent on the two construction contracts which cover Rashidiya & Casablanca Intersections and the Nad Al Hamar and Marrakech Intersections.

Al Tayer said he expects the first phase of the project to be opened in December, and the entire project, which has a cost of AED404 million ($110 million), to be completed in the first half of 2018.

Al Tayer recently visited the project site and received a briefing about the progress rate on each phase which includes the construction of roads, bridges, junctions and a tunnel.

The project will increase the capacity of the Airport Street by an additional 5,000 vehicles per hour, enhance traffic safety levels, and reduce transit times.

Al Tayer said: “The RTA is proceeding with the upgrading of the infrastructure of road networks and mass transit systems in Dubai by figuring out integrated solutions for land and marine transit systems that are safe for users and compatible with the Dubai Strategic Plan 2021.”
