M&S confirmed for DP World logistics project in UK

Retail giant will build a $311m distribution centre at London Gateway Logistics Park

International retailer Marks & Spencer will develop a £200m ($311m) distribution centre at the London Gateway Logistics Park being built by Dubai port operator DP World.

M&S is the first confirmed tenant of the logistics park, which will be Europe’s biggest and built within the massive London Gateway deep sea port.

M&S’s 900,000 square foot warehouse is due to open in 2016.

“By bringing ships carrying millions of products closer to the point of consumption we will help M&S to shorten its supply chain,” DP World chief executive Simon Moore said.

The London Gateway, the UK’s first deepwater port, will be bigger than London’s Olympic Park and will handle 3.5 million containers a year. It is expected to open later this year.

Prime Minister David Cameron praised the project earlier this year as being “an emblem of ambition”.

DP World is the world’s fourth biggest port operator and controls about 60 maritime container ports worldwide.
