Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and its subsidiary companies are to stop recruiting expatriates.
The announcement was made by Minister of Oil, Acting Minister of Electricity and Water Dr. Khaled Al-Fadhel, during a parliamentary committee session on Wednesday, according to a report by state news agency KUNA.
Al-Fadhel said non-Kuwaitis would not be hired for the remainder of 2020 and 2021, and the number of special contracts for foreign workers would be cut.
He warned that he “would not be inactive” towards Kuwaiti citizens being made redundant from the national petroleum companies.
Foreigners account for nearly 3.4 million of Kuwait’s 4.8 million people.
Last week, Kuwait’s prime minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah said the country’s expatriate population should be more than halved to 30 percent of the total.
While, at the end of last month, it was revealed that Kuwait Airways was planning to lay off as many as 1,500 expatriate employees in response to the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.
