Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior has denied reports on social media which claim it has launched a new surveillance law on the sites.
While it is obliged to follow security measures, it does not in any way breach personal privacies, the ministry said in a statement issued yesterday, reported state news agency KUNA.
“The reports are absolutely baseless and untrue. There hasn’t been any new communication law enacted,” said the statement.
The ministry said the information technology law which was put into effect in January does not permit its intrusion on private accounts.
It said social media users are free to use the sites as long as they abide by state rules.
Referring to the electronic media law, ministry spokesman Mohammad Al-Awwash said the law is aimed at regulating media professions and is not applicable to personal accounts on social media.
He denied allegations that the new law aims at limiting freedom of speech of users with personal accounts on sites such as Twitter.
