Dubai recovers 30t of consumer, electronic items from ‘abandoned’ manholes

All of them were packed and ready for sale to the public, says Dubai Municipality official

Dubai Municipality unearthed 30 tonnes of consumer and electronic items stored by workers’ in “abandoned” manholes at a labour camp, it said on Monday.

The manholes in one of the demolished labour accommodations in Al Muhaisina were being used to store kitchenware, blankets, tools, carpets, home appliances and accessories.

Municipality’s head of environmental emergency office Mohammed Abbas Al Balooshi confirmed that the confiscated items were completely destroyed.

“Our inspectors raided these places and found out that they were filled with accessories, blankets, carpets, and kitchenware.

“All of them were packed and ready for sale to the public, who were unaware of the danger to them by using those accessories that were polluting the environment and public health,” he said.

Separately, the municipality’s environmental emergency office seized 45 vehicles, which were supplying markets with “rotten” vegetables, fish and meat from outside the emirate.

The municipality has imposed a heavy fine on these traders and taking a written undertaking not to repeat these violations, failing which the vehicles will be confiscated permanently, Al Balooshi said.
