Seven-time Grammy award-winning band Coldplay will be performing on New Year’s Eve in Abu Dhabi, the organisers behind the event confirmed on Sunday.
The group, who last played in the capital two years ago, will kick start the emirate’s hosting of the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race, Flash Entertainment said in a statement.
Coldplay, who have sold over 50 million records worldwide, will perform at the Volvo Ocean Race Destination Village on the Corniche Breakwater.
Last week the band, fronted by Chris Martin, announced it would be adding additional dates to its UK tour after tickets for shows sold out within 90 minutes. The band will be using the shows to promote their latest album, Mylo Xyloto, which became their fifth album to debt at number one after its release in October.
Abu Dhabi has played host to a number of international concerts in the last few years. Last week US pop star Britney Spears opened the first of three after race concerts at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The pop princess was the opening act for the concerts which included Beatles star Paul McCartney, US band Incubus and British outfit The Cult.
Full details on the Coldplay concert will be announced shortly, said organisers.
