An minor earthquake measuring 3.01 on the Richter scale hit Bahrain on Monday morning last, March 9.
The Directorate of Meteorology at the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications (MTT) received calls on Monday claiming that an earthquake had been felt in various part of the kingdom, shortly after 6am. However, initial investigations failed to show up any seismic activity.
The Meteorology Directorate checked monitoring systems in the kingdom, the UAE, Oman and Kuwait which corroborated this information and subsequently issued statements on the MTT social media accounts denying any seismic activity.
However, further investigations through the Geological Survey Authority in Saudi Arabia confirmed that the earthquake had occurred at 6.06am with a strength of 3.01 on the Richter scale and a depth of 3.55km.
A statement on Bahrain’s news agency website said: “The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications reaffirms its commitment to issuing correct information in a transparent and accurate manner and would like to thank all members of the public who called and interacted with MTT either by phone or on its social media channels.”
No damage was reported as a result of the seismic activity. In general, an earthquake of 2.5 or less is usually not felt, but can be recorded by seismograph.
