The Bangladeshi embassy in Bahrain has boosted its counselling support services following a number of suicides in the kingdom, including one real estate agent who broadcast his suicide live in Facebook.

The Gulf Daily News (GDN) website reported 23 people had taken their own lives in Bahrain so far this year, 21 of whom were expats.

“It is alarming and we are troubled to find that our community is going through a lot of mental stress,” Bangladesh Embassy labour consul Shaikh Tahidul Islam was quoted as saying in the GDN report.

“We have increased our efforts in reaching out to them through social media and we are also using community volunteers to step up counselling support.”

The move comes as it was reported that a 30 year-old Bangladeshi man broadcast his suicide live on Facebook to hundreds of his friends and family.

The real estate worker allegedly took his own life after his marriage proposal to a woman back home was rejected. The woman concerned was also reportedly on the call when the incident was broadcast live over social media and begged him to reconsider.

Earlier this week, GDN reported that up to 2,000 Bangladeshi nationals per month are leaving Bahrain and returning to their home country.

“On an average between 1,000 and 2,000 Bangladesh nationals leave the country every month and we have been observing this phenomenon since August 2018,” a Bangladeshi Embassy official was quoted as saying.
