Bahrain has announced a $1.6m infrastructure investment in the Philippines with the kingdom to build 500 housing units and two vocational complexes for youth and sports in Tacloban and Subic Bay Freeport, it was reported.
The two countries signed the deal as part of a humanitarian program to help survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, also known as Typhoon Yolanda, which devastated parts of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, in November last year.
The agreement is between the Bahrain Red Crescent Society and the Philippine National Red Cross.
“There’s always this special bond between the Philippines and Bahrain altogether,” said Bahrain’s Sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
“This is the kind of friendship we should have. This is a very, very strong humanitarian effort, this is a first in terms of our countries, we are looking forward to a strong relationship not only with the Red Crescent, which is our kindred spirits, but also with the royal kingdom of Bahrain.”
The tropical storm is the deadliest Philippines typhoon on record, killing at least 6,201 people in that country alone.
As of January, 2014, bodies are still being found.
