Arabtec wins $96m contract to build UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020

Company says construction to begin this month and completion expected in Q4 2019

Abu Dhabi National Media Council has awarded a $96.18 million (AED353m) contract to Arabtec Construction to build the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2020.

Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and inspired by a falcon in flight, the UAE pavilion will be one of the most important landmarks at the Expo 2020 Dubai.

Construction on the pavilion is scheduled to begin this month and delivered in the last quarter of 2019, the company said in a statement posted on the Dubai Financial Market.

The pavilion will be located opposite Al Wasl Plaza in the centre of the 4.38 square kilometre exhibition area. It will have a built-up area of 19,200 square metres, comprising 2,000 square metres upper floor and a 662 square metre mezzanine, with a plaza level and related facilities spread across 3,000 square metres. The ground level includes a garden and car park spread across 13,300 square metres.

In a statement, company group chief executive officer Hamish Tyrwhitt said: “The UAE Pavilion project marks yet another achievement on our roadmap to a sustainable and successful future. It highlights our strategic focus on the UAE as our core market and also demonstrates our commitment to building our future through the development of social infrastructure in addition to instilling a performance based culture within our organisation.”

Expo 2020 Dubai will open its doors on October 20, 2020 and end on April 10, 2021.
