Dubai will celebrate the eighth ‘Car Free Day’ on February 5, with over 1,500 government and private companies taking part in the event, Dubai Municipality said on Sunday.
The campaign aims to meet the objectives of the UAE National Agenda 2021 on air quality and reducing carbon footprint in the country. In 2016, nearly 1,070 companies took part in the environmental initiative.
In 2015, Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority said the emirate has 540 cars for every 1000 people, making it one of the cities with the highest vehicle densities in the world.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, pointed out that each vehicle, with a full tank fuel size of 15 gallons, emits nearly 140 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide, leading to total emissions of 4 tonnes annually and contributing towards global warming.
A number of companies from education, real estate, retail, hotels and banks will participate in the “green” initiative along with people with special needs.
Lootah said following the initiative nearly 30,000 personal vehicles have been abandoned with these people turning to environmentally-friendly public transport.
