A businessman’s guide to professional hairstyles
By Staff Writer
Find out the right hairstyle for your line of work
Let’s start with the most traditional option – swept neatly to the back with similar length on the top and sides. This is an old-school kind of hairstyle that works for all lines of work. It’s formal, it’s mature, and it’s a safe option for anyone in a high business position. Jon Hamm from Mad Men models the look almost too perfectly.
If you’ve ever seen the hit TV series Suits, you’d have noticed the hairstyle sported by Gabriel Macht, or Harvey Spector, as viewers know him. Macht’s style is very similar to the first traditional option, but at a shorter length and a sleeker look. We say this works better for younger businessmen who want a fresher, more modern look, while still sticking to traditional style.
We love Tom Hardy’s hairstyle for businessmen – and not just because he’s Tom Hardy. Similar to the marine hairstyle, his cut is short on top and almost completely shaved off on the sides. Some might argue that this choice is too risqué for business, but we disagree. The trick to keeping it formal is constantly grooming it and keeping it neat. If it looks proper, it is proper. Hardy’s moustache and outlined beard helps add maturity to the look as well. Nonetheless, we think this look is better suited for fashion-friendly fields like fashion or entertainment.
If you’re a fan of much shorter hair, opt for Eddie Murphy’s razor-short hairstyle. Not only does it require minimal maintenance, but it comes across as young and effortless and has a cool vibe to it. Could you tell that Murphy’s 54 years old? Okay, so it’s mostly thanks to his genes, but the hairstyle helps too.
You don’t have to give up curls or long hair to have a professional look. Matthew McConaughey proves that. All you have to do is keep your hair at neck-length and comb back the curls. Instantly, it takes you from “casual” to “put-together.” We believe you can sport this style in a formal business environment as long as you keep it neat and proportionate. It shows personality and makes you stand out. Still, those who opt for it are usually in relaxed fields like journalism, marketing, or advertising.
We had to include David Gandy’s look because it’s a more polished option than McConaughey’s. It’s slightly shorter so has a more formal vibe. At the same time, it allows men with curly hair to sport their natural curls in a business-appropriate way. Opt for this if you’re a fan of long hair but work in a strict business environment.
Ryan Gosling: We know – it’s hard to tell the difference between men’s haircuts. But that’s just because there’s little hair to play. However, when you pay closer attention to the details, you’ll notice that Gosling’s hairstyle differs from the others on the list as it’s similar to a pompadour cut. It’s much longer on the top and almost razor-short on the sides. So it’s office-approved but trendy and up to date. We recommend this for businessmen working in fast-moving businesses, like food and beverage, entertainment, or nightlife.
