Gallery: Rocket blasts off carrying first Emirati to ISS

A Soyuz rocket blasted off on Wednesday from the Baikonur space centre in Kazakhstan carrying an Emirati who is set to make history as the first Arab on the International Space Station.

Emirati astronaut Hazzaa al-Mansoori, 35, blasted into space accompanied by Russia's Oleg Skripochka and NASA astronaut Jessica Meir onboard a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur in Kazakhstan.

Sheikh Hamdan was present at the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre in Dubai during the launch of the Soyuz MS-15 carrying First Emirati astronaut Hazzaa al-Mansoori to International Space Station.

Dubai’s iconic Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest skyscraper, lit up the moment of blast-off at 5:57pm local time.

Following the detailed docking process that too over two hours, they were met by the new crewmates, Expedition 60 commander Alexey Ovchinin, cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov, European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano and NASA astronauts Nick Hague, Christina Koch and Drew Morgan.
