AB In Focus: Ericsson’s MEA President Fadi Pharaon discusses 5G evolution and 6G plans at GITEX

In this episode of AB in Focus, Senior Reporter Tala Michel Issa interviews Fadi Pharaon, President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa, at GITEX

Ericsson, a global leader in telecommunications, was a prominent presence at the GITEX technology show in Dubai. Fadi Pharaon, President of Ericsson Middle East and Africa, sat down for an interview with Arabian Business where he shed light on the company’s activities at GITEX and its vision for the future of connectivity.

Pharaon discussed Ericsson’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of 5G technology. He emphasised that 5G is still evolving to unlock its full capabilities. Collaboration between industry, governments, and regulators will be key to ensuring 5G reaches its potential and is widely adopted.

Looking further ahead, Pharaon revealed that Ericsson is already conducting research and development for 6G, the next phase of wireless technology. Though 6G remains in early stages, open dialogue and cooperation will be important to shape the vision for this new generation of connectivity, he said, adding that he expects to see its first applications between 2028 and 2030.

The impacts of 5G on smart cities and Industry 4.0 were also addressed during the interview. Pharaon believes 5G’s low latency and high bandwidth will enable technologies like autonomous vehicles, remote healthcare, and smart infrastructure. Intelligent networks using data can optimize resource use to create more sustainable and efficient urban environments with enhanced living standards.

Pharaon also highlighted Ericsson’s work on generative AI and its ability to augment human abilities. However, he stressed that AI development must consider ethics and human values to ensure responsible implementation.

Sustainability is also a focus, he said, revealing efforts to reduce Ericsson’s carbon footprint and enable greener practices across industries using technology. Pharaon sees technology playing a key role in environmental challenges through innovation.
