Five people have died in Saudi Arabia after the car they were travelling in hit a camel that had wandered onto the road.

The camel had strayed onto the main highway between Makkah and Riyadh, Riyadh Red Crescent official spokesman Abdullah Al Muraibidh was quoted in local media as saying.

Eight others in the same vehicle also were injured in the crash.

Hitting a camel is considered a crime in Saudi Arabia.

It is not known whether the driver was among the dead or would be charged.
