The UAE Wages Protection System (WPS) posted an increase of one million employees to 5.2 million in 2022, from 4.2 million in 2021.
Last year also saw a jump in the total number of salaries to AED 55.5 million from AED 46.4 million in 2021, according to the 2022 Annual Report issued by the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE).
The report said there was also an increase in the value of salaries paid in 2022, amounting to AED 249 billion, compared with AED 212.0 billion in the previous year.
The number of employers registered as on December 31, 2022 in WPS increased to 275,680 from 216,690 at the end of 2021, an increase of 27 percent.
The WPS was introduced by the UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), to ensure that the relationship between employers and domestic workers is stable, and that wages are paid to the domestic worker easily and on time.
The WPS came into effect on April 1, and requires all facilities registered at the Ministry to pay the salaries of their workers at least once a month, or at the times stated in the employment contract, if less than one month, provided that this payment is according to the procedures and times specified in this decision.
