The UAE is set to celebrate Emirati Women’s Day on Wednesday, recognising the contributions of Emirati women to the nation’s development.

This year’s theme, ‘We share for tomorrow’, was chosen by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF).

The UAE has made progress in gender equality, ranking seventh globally and first regionally in the 2024 Gender Inequality Index issued by the United Nations Development Programme.

Over recent years, the UAE has implemented laws and legislative amendments covering various aspects of women’s lives. These changes have contributed to the UAE’s global competitiveness.

Two years ago, the UAE adopted the Gender Balance Strategy 2022-2026, aiming to make the country a global model for gender balance.

The strategy includes four main objectives: economic participation and entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, well-being and quality of life, and protection and global leadership.

The goal is to transition from closing gender gaps and exploring best practices to positioning the country as an exporter of best gender balance practices, focusing on the post-global competitiveness phase, WAM said in a statement on Tuesday.

The General Women’s Union and the UAE Gender Balance Council have been instrumental in empowering women and building their capacities in various fields.
