The moon sighting committee is scheduled to meet to announce the starting date of Ramadan based on the sighting of the crescent tonight. Depending on if the moon is sighted, the holy month will either begin on Wednesday, March 22 or Thursday, March 23.
The International Astronomical Centre (IAC) announced that the crescent for the last days of Sha’aban was sighted, however, it was barely visible due to adverse weather conditions.
The astronomy centre posted on Twitter saying, “The crescent appears with difficulty due to the dusty and partly cloudy weather conditions.”
The committee is set to convene tonight, following Maghrib prayers to officially announce the commencement of the month of Ramadan.
Presided over by Abdullah Sultan bin Awad Al Nuaimi, Minister of Justice, the meeting will be attended by several high-ranking officials.
The Moon-Sighting Committee will be notified by Shariah courts nationwide of any sightings, and the Lunar Calendar Committee at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department will gather evidence and report its findings to the committee.
Saudi Arabia has asked all Muslims in the country to look for the crescent moon and inform authorities when it is seen.
