UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has inaugurated the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Indonesia.

The inauguration also saw Indonesian President Joko Widodo in attendance.

“I was pleased to join President Joko Widodo in Solo, Indonesia to inaugurate the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Named in honour of the UAE’s Founding Father, the Mosque represents his values of peace and goodwill, reflecting the longstanding ties that exist between our two countries,” Sheikh Mohamed said in a post via Twitter.

In July 2019, Sheikh Mohamed gifted the $20 million building to Indonesia during his trip to the Muslim country.

The replica of the original mosque in Abu Dhabi, is smaller and is built with four minarets and a central dome, surrounded by four smaller domes.

Architects of the mosque have also included Indonesian detailing, with local materials used for construction wherever possible.

The mosque can hold a congregation of 10,000.

In 2020, Sheikh Mohamed honoured the Indonesian President, by ordering the construction of a mosque in Abu Dhabi’s diplomatic area.

The president also renamed Al Maarid Street as President Joko Widodo Street to mark the bond between the two countries. The road, which was inaugurated in October 2020, coincided with Widodo’s election anniversary.
