The month of Ramadan in the UAE began on March 23. The holy month will continue until the end of April with Eid Al Fitr expected to fall on April 20 or 21, depending on the sighting of the moon. Every evening those observing Ramadan break their fasts according to country-specific timings.

Millions of Muslims around the world observe Ramadan, an important month in the Islamic calendar, through fasting, prayer, and performing charitable deeds. The fast is broken with a meal known as iftar, commonly comprising traditional foods like dates.

This tradition goes back to the early 1800s when it was originally used as a way to signal the end of the day’s fast, prior to the advent of modern technology.

The cannon is usually placed in open public spaces, such as a mosque or a public square.
