The Abu Dhabi Police will impose a AED400 fine on pedestrians found jaywalking. The authority announced the same on its official Instagram page.
In addition to this, a AED500 fine will be imposed on motorists who fail to give way to pedestrians crossing the road at designated junctions. Motorists will also be given six traffic black points, as per the Federal Traffic Law.
The new fines are part of the authority’s efforts to ensure safe crossing regulations, as part of its new campaign ‘Your life is a responsibility’. The campaign was first launched at the Gulf Traffic Week, and aims to promote a safe traffic culture as well as road security.
Brigadier General Mahmoud Yousef Al Balushi, who is the acting director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said the campaign also calls on pedestrians to make use of pedestrian traffic lights and indicate when pedestrians can safely cross the road. These are also synced with traffic lights for vehicles.
Pedestrian tunnels and overhead bridges also provide safe routes for crossing, Al Balushi said.
Recently, the Abu Dhabi Police also announced that motorists in the UAE can now face an AED400 fine for failing to follow lanes at intersections.
Abu Dhabi Police announced the traffic law via a video on Twitter. The video details rules and regulations to be followed by motorists at intersections.
