A 5.6 magnitude hit Southern Turkey, on Monday, reportedly killing one person and injuring several others. This follows three earthquakes that hit the region on February 6 and February 20 of 7.8, 6.4 and 5.8 magnitudes respectively.

The recent earthquake stuck Yesilyurt in Malatya province, buildings that were already damaged from the previous earthquakes have collapsed as a result of the new 5.6 magnitude tremor.

A 7.8-magnitude quake first reported on February 6, was felt in the Turkish towns of Antakya and Adana, as well as across the border in neighbouring Syria.

More than 6,000 aftershocks have been recorded in the past two weeks, but the 6.4-magnitude reported on February 20 had a significant impact, followed minutes later by a 5.8-magnitude quake.

The World Health Organisation says 26m people need assistance in Turkey and Syria following the initial quakes.

Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay called on citizens in the region to stay away from damaged buildings as authorities scan the affected areas.

A major aid operation has seen countries across the Middle East offer humanitarian support to both Syria and Turkey. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan ordered the provision of an additional $50m as relief aid for quake-affected people in Syria.
