The Dubai 2040 Urban Masterplan, led by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, outlined several projects under ten key initiatives, last week.
This was the second phase of the masterplan, and saw the concept of a 20-minute city, which allows residents to reach their destinations within 20 minutes by foot or bicycle.
The project will see the development of integrated service centres, with necessary facilities.
Residents will also be able to access 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations through mass transit stations.
“A plan will be developed to enhance and utilise urban spaces, such as alleyways, spaces underneath bridges, and squares, by augmenting the elements of well-being to make them attractive and relaxing for residents and visitors,” a statement from the Dubai ruler’s office said.
The initiative is aimed at “enriching the beauty of urban areas, developing green corridors, reducing the carbon footprint, and enhancing the landscaping strategy,” the statement said adding that a comprehensive plan for pedestrians and soft mobility across Dubai will focus on connected pathways in high-density areas.
The 20-minute city is maily divided in four centres — sector centre, district centre, community centre and neighbourhood centre.
The sector centre will feature a sector park, co-working hubs, STS/Police Stations/Civil Defence, hospital, Eid prayer area, government centre and libraries.
The district centre will feature a shopping centre, district park, co-working hub, healthcare centre/clinic and a school.
The community centre will include a Friday mosque, community shopping, community park, primary school, polyclinic, playground and kindergarten.
The neighbourhood centre will include the neighbourhood park, smart police station, the local mosque and convenience retail store.
Each sector will feature “integrated service centers with all the necessary facilities that allow residents to reach their destinations within a 20-minute timeframe on foot or by bicycle through facilitating sustainable pedestrian, bicycle and transportation trips across the city,” the government of Dubai said.
The plan involves placing 55 percent of the residents within 800 meters of mass transit stations, allowing them to reach 80 percent of their daily needs and destinations, the statement added.
