Saudi authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 2m Captagon tablets into the country hidden inside tomatoes

Saudi authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 2m Captagon tablets into the country hidden inside tomatoes.

The Zakat and Customs Authority (ZATCA) stopped 2,015,116 tablets in trucks at Al Haditha port, reported state-run news agency SPA.

ZATCA said that a shipment of “tomatoes and pomegranates” was carried on one of the incoming trucks.

During a routine inspection of one of the vehicles, the drugs were found hidden inside the cavities of tomato and pomegranate.

This week Abu Dhabi Police caught a suspect attempting to smuggle 4.5m Captagon pills into the UAE. The suspect hid prescription-only pills in food containers, and planned to smuggle them to a neighbouring country.
