Saudi Arabia has announced that schools and universities in the kingdom’s Makkah province will remain closed on Thursday, citing rainy weather.
Physical classes will be suspended for students in Jeddah, Rabigh and Khulais, the Makkah province education department said.
However, classes will be conducted through the Madrasati platform for school children.
The National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) forecast moderate to heavy rain in parts of Makkah, Madinah, Jeddah and Rabigh.
Thunderstorms are also expected in Al Qassim, Riyadh, the eastern region and Tabuk, according to the Saudi Press Agency. Thunderclouds can appear in Jizan, Asir and Al Baha.
Makkah Municipality said that the city was prepared to deal with the heavy rain, following the heavy torrential rains that wreaked havoc in the kingdom in November.
Heavy rains lashed across Jeddah, flooding several parts of the province and sweeping away cars and other vehicles, was the highest ever recorded rain, the Saudi National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) said.
The downpour lasted for about 8 hours – from morning 8 o’clock till about 5 in the evening – amounted to 179.7 mm in the south of the governorate, according to the center’s monitoring stations.
