Prince William settles phone-hacking claim for ‘very large sum’

Court documents revealed that there was an alleged secret agreement between the palace and the newspaper

Prince William

British Prince William has reportedly settled a phone-hacking claim for a “very large sum” as revealed by court documents for Prince Harry.

The documents reveal that there was a secret agreement struck between Buckingham Palace and Rupert Murdoch’s UK newspaper arm in 2020.

The court documents were disclosed as part of a court case involving William’s brother, the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry.

News Group Newspapers (NGN), publisher of The Sun is being sued by Harry for unlawful information gathering from the 1990s until 2016.

Allegations include phone hacking, obtaining private information and Meghan’s social security number.

NGN denies that anyone from The Sun was involved in any of the allegations.

The documents said “It is important to bear in mind that in responding to this bid by NGN to prevent his claims going to trial, the claimant has had to make public the details of this secret agreement, as well as the fact that his brother, His Royal Highness, Prince William, has recently settled his claim against NGN behind the scenes.”

According to a witness statement, the deal was struck to “avoid the situation where a member of the royal family would have to sit in the witness box and recount the specific details of the private and highly sensitive voicemails that had been intercepted”.
