A deep 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines early Thursday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake struck near Hukay, southwest of the capital city Manila, at a depth of 112 kilometres at 10:00 AM local time.
Although there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, Philippine authorities have warned that there may be aftershocks and potential damage. Assessments are still ongoing.
The state seismological agency ruled out the possibility of tsunami waves due to the tremor’s depth.
The Philippines experiences regular earthquakes and volcanic eruptions due to its location on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ an area of seismic shifts and volcanic activity that stretched from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
The quake lasted between 30 seconds and 1 minute, Calatagan disaster officer Ronald Torres told AFP.
“It was a bit strong. We had to run outside,” Calatagan police chief Emil Mendoza told AFP.
