Palm Jumeirah’s Nakheel Mall sees rise in scooter thefts

Residents report several scooters stolen outside new mall

Palm Jumeirah Nakheel Mall

Palm Jumeirah residents are falling victim to a surge in the theft of e-scooters, according to several people spoken to by Arabian Business.

It is understood that a number of thefts have occurred outside Nakheel Mall, where several residents park scooters whilst shopping.

A Nakheel security guard told Arabian Business: “People need to lock their scooters it’s as simple as that. There is some construction work going on which means the security cameras don’t always pick everything up.”

The Palm’s Golden Mile area has in recent months become a hot spot for e-scooter fans, with several F&B outlets and Nakheel Mall close to a specially built scooter track.

One resident said: “I left my scooter there for 10 minutes to go shopping and it was gone when I came back. Security guys told me it’s my own fault for not locking it, but nobody ever does around here.”

E-scooters are now hugely popular in Dubai, with residents needed a permit to operate one. By August – three months since the introduction of permits – more than 38,000 had been issued.

The permit allows the use of e-scooters in 10 districts of the city, covering a 167-kilometre stretch. The districts included are Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Internet City, Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, The Palm Jumeirah and City Walk.

Although many residents have purchased their own scooters, four companies in Dubai operate e-scooters that can be rented on demand.
