Dubai Customs seize over 400g of marijuana hidden in pineapples

Dubai Customs have seized 417.30 grams of marijuana in the form of 399 rolls, stuffed inside pineapples.

Police officials nabbed a passenger coming from an African country at Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport.

Officers raised their suspicion after taking note of a box containing pineapples, transported from an African country, Dubai Customs said in a statement. The passenger was then stopped for an inspection.

The passenger had hidden the rolls in small plastic bags, which were then placed inside the pineapples.

“Dubai Customs is very alert and works hard to protect society by preventing the entry of narcotic substances,” Khalid Ahmed, (Acting) director of passenger operations department said in a statement.

Ahmed said, “smugglers try to circumvent customs inspectors by hiding their contraband inside cosmetics and personal care boxes, or in the linings of their bags,” adding that “protecting our society from the dangers of drugs is at the forefront of our inspectors’ priorities, being the first line of defense for the security of our borders and ports.”

Due to the high traffic in the winter season, Dubai Customs’ Ahmed said strict plans will be put in place to ensure smuggling does not occur.

“Thanks to the vigilance and distinctive experience of our inspectors and the advanced scanning systems in place including the Smart Bag Inspection system at Dubai Airports, we can efficiently curb any illegitimate smuggling attempt,” Ahmed said.
