Revealed: How Dubai’s Al Quoz is transforming into a global creative hub

The Al Quoz Creative Zone master plan is to be rolled out over four years

Al Quoz

The Higher Committee of the Al Quoz Creative Zone approved the master plan for the Al Quoz Creative Zone earlier this week.

The plan calls for a comprehensive reimagining and development of the area’s community infrastructure, public services and spaces, and “artistic ambience” over the next four years, according to a statement carried by WAM.

“The development of the zone will further raise the emirate’s position as a regional and global destination for creatives. Apart from providing an exceptional infrastructure, we are also committed to put in place a policy framework that will enable the creative industry to thrive,” Sheikh Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and Member of the Dubai Council said.

“The implementation of the master plan will yet again demonstrate the spirit of partnership that has driven Dubai’s remarkable development over the past few decades.”

Sheikh Latifa chaired the approval of the master plan, in a meeting attended by dignitaries from across the emirate.

Al Quoz as a creative hub

The master plan was developed by Dubai Municipality after studying various local and international creative clusters.

According to a statement, the master plan will see Al Quoz Creative Zone transformed into “one of the largest communities of its kind both in terms of total floor area and scale of creative activity.”

The land in the area will be optimised to boost creative activity within the community, with the number of creative workers within the zone expected to increase to 20,000, up from its current 900. The zone will also provide housing for over 8,000 people and attract 33,000 visitors per day.

A further 2,900 affordable housing units for creatives, along with public space for events and activities, are also expected to be built.

Public artwork will be displayed in the zone to “create an aesthetically distinctive identity for the community and offer a unique experience for visitors.”

“The master plan has been designed to create a vibrant cultural and creative destination that brings together diverse stakeholders, encourages the public to engage with art, culture and creativity and creates opportunities for creatives to collaborate, network, share knowledge and access learning resources,” the statement said.

In 2021, Dubai first announced its plans to create a creative zone in the Al Quoz area.
