International Women’s Day was celebrated around the world on March 8. Companies and individuals globally highlighted the roles of women in organisations and the importance of diversity.
“I’ve been fortunately to have always worked in industries and for brands where diversity and inclusion have been brand pillars. We still have a long way to go across the GCC, both in implementation and education. It is a continuous rewarding effort if any company wants to attract the best. It’s not a box you can tick and move on,” said Nisreen Shocair, CEO Virgin Mobile, MENA.
Addressing the topic of inclusivity and how that would help the UAE achieve growth targets, Shocair explained that the country is exceptional and has a strong impact on the business and social community. “What is still missing is the consistency from within the private sector. I’m not a big believer in government quotas on the private sector, but sometimes a nudge, especially for some underrepresented demographics, is helpful. People of determination, for example,” she said.
Boardroom diversity is an issue commonly discussed, however, Shocair believes that it’s not about ensuring that nationality and gender are covered. She believes that the board has to work together and challenge one another to achieve excellence for the organization. “I don’t want to be placed on a board just because I’m a woman. Many of my female colleagues feel the same,” she added.
Virgin Mobile have a series of activations scheduled now until Emirati Women’s Day, “We celebrate our women everyday,” Shocair concluded.
