As awareness around the value of combatting climate change and protecting the environment continues to grow in the region, The Sustainable City, the first fully operational sustainable community in the Middle East, has launched a collection of eco-friendly short-stay studio-apartments.
Allowing tourists and residents alike to a significantly reduce their carbon footprint, the building complex was designed using highly insulated materials and is powered by renewable energy from rooftop solar panels.
The sustainable homes are fitted with low flow fixtures, as well as water and energy efficient washing machines with room cleaning services set to use environmentally-friendly cleaning products.
To avoid single-use plastics, the studio-apartments are supplied with filtered drinking water, and to facilitate waste recycling, the homes are equipped with two bins, one of which is for recyclables.
Guests can monitor their water and energy consumption during their stay with an energy metering system, receiving an individual carbon footprint statement upon checkout.
Those staying in the homes will have access to the urban farm and animal sanctuary, its running and cycling tracks and the building’s roof, which has been converted into a green relaxation area.
Construction on the $354 million The Sustainable City began in 2013 and the first residents moved in 2016. Its first phase covers five million square feet and comprises more than 500 villas, grouped into five residential clusters and connected to an urban farm and park that runs along the entire length of the development, forming the community’s ‘Green Spine’, within which there are 11 biodome greenhouses. Features available to its 3,000 residents include an electricity-generating gym, equestrian club, mixed-used plaza, Fairgreen International School and several clinics.
