Turkish basketball player Mehmet Okur, who plays for US team the New Jersey Nets, is the Middle East’s highest paid sports star with a salary last year of US$10.9m, according to a global list compiled by ESPN magazine.

While Qatar was recently declared the world’s richest country per capita by Forbes magazine, its highest paid sports star was soccer player Hussein Yasser, who plays for Belgian side Lierse SK, and who earned a somewhat lowly US$500,000
This was compared to the US boxer Floyd Mayweather, who earned US$40m in the same period and was the top earner on the list overall.
